[ One of the downsides of relying on supply drops means there's always something that's gone. Or just not enough of it. Alcohol is sure one of these things. One after-mission party and it's nearly gone, the horror.

Hence half-empty bottle of mediocre whiskey turned into a treasure to stash and protect. For an occasion exactly like that - getting to share a drink and get to know a teammate better.

This might not be a prizewinner among brands, but despite that it's one of the more popular drinks on the Ximilia station [ He poured them two glasses, emulating the barkeep he knew always explaining trivia. Only he makes it all up for a joke ] Do ya know why is that so? Because it's the only whiskey left.

[ Ba-dum-tss ]

At least until next supply drop.

[Zhao smiled despite himself. The joke was lame and they both knew it, but it was what it was. Which was the truth. Zhao wouldn't blame anyone for hiding it when there wasn't enough of it to go around.]

That's a shame, but I'm happy to get a taste of it. It's always a pleasure to get to try something rare and meaningful.

[He, too, was mostly joking. Apparent by the lilt to his voice.]

[ Rare and meaningful... good joke, but also not really wrong. It is rare here. And meaningful part— ]

[He repeated it in Japanese before raising his glass and then knocking it back. The taste wasn't perfect but it was whiskey. And that's what mattered.]

[ Alcohol is a sure way to loosen his tongue. Even without it Majima was always capable of talking a lot (or just being a lot), and mission? It makes sense to share as much as possible with the newbies ]

Retrieve the Orb, that's always the goal. The locals knew we're here to help them for a price. See, the rulers of the city, they had that Orb, and then they— misplaced it. At the same they also had a problem with a ghost girl that was attackin' their city with a bunch of monsters. Shit's straight out of a movie only that—

[ He pauses, briefly. Looking at the whiskey at the bottom of his glass ]

Nothin' was what it seemed to be. Not even the monster.

[Zhao raised his brows as he listened to the incredulous story.]

Are you sure this isn't the plot to some manga you read? [He joked lightly. But he kept listening, encouraging the man to go on with the follow-up:] All right, so what happened to change minds about the monster?

[ M-manga? ]

Yer on a space station that just convinced ya to grow a tail and horns! Don't gimme the 'too cool for this crap' crap.

[ Huffs. Pouts. Humorously. Even if his tone had hit a higher, irritated note. He was very well aware how outlandish it sounded but— they're both in this together, he's not a clown, etc. ]

[ Smug bastard. Majima gave him the flattest look he could, but he wasn't able to keep it up for long and ended trying to cover an amused snort. Starting to plot vengeance. ]

Ya know, it was more fun when it was happenin'. Runnin', sneakin', investigatin' and puttin' together all the puzzles. The big plot twist was— nobles were shitty, [ No surprise there ] the ghost girl wasn't a ghost, and her monsters— Well her monsters were people.

[ It really does sound like something straight out of a shounen manga— wait, no seinen more likely. Shit's too dark for kiddy titles ]

Rulers swept a nasty, painful infection under the rug. [ If something in his voice makes it sound like he had a first-hand experience, it's because he did ] Infected wanted justice, rulers wanted safety, and there we were stuck in the middle.

[Despite the fantastical nature of the story (or perhaps because of it), Zhao listened intently to the tale. It did sound rather like a plot out of a manga yet to hear Majima tell it like a true story kept it curious. How could it be both.

It was definitely something to think about. This wouldn't be a walk in the park from the sound of it. Which made sense considering what was on offer, but some of the aspects were too out-of-this-world. Well, his world anyway.

His brows furrowed as he listened.]

So what did you do?

Looked for clues, busted few heads. Got some nice leads before, well— an attack happened. I got the bug, among few others. They locked us in an infirmary, but I had a friend among guards. Good girl, even if a little weird.

[ There was a genuine fondness when he recalls her. In the end, she also helped other Orbers, taking their side. Probably got into a fair share of trouble for them, but was as much a friend as one can make in a different world. ]

She let me out, so I got to meet up with our brainiac division. Be a guinea pig for a while as they tested for a cure— it was obvious at this point that it'as the Ghost Girl who had the Orb, and instead of killin' her for it, the team decided to bargain with her, offer a cure for her people to get that Orb. Bypassin' the shitty nobles altogether.

[ Majima couldn't help a smug smirk to show up. They really got lucky out there, ended doing a good thing and completing the goal. It was something to be proud about, as a team accomplishment that's it. But he knew better than to consider that it's gonna go this way every time. His expression returned to a more serious one when he continued the story ]

I left for the infected encampment when changes got too severe.

Sounds noble and shit.

[Despite his words, Zhao didn't feel disgusted by the outcome. Quite the opposite. He was pleased to hear it went so well. Except-]

Obviously you made it out alive so the infection didn't take you. So those brainiacs discovered a cure for it. Glad it wasn't worse for you. [Even if it didn't sound all that fun. Did he want to ask more? Yes. Did he decide not to press too hard into that painful memory? Also yes.] And the bargaining went down so...you got the Orb there?

That's right. We have some real smartasses on board, they made the cure. Can't say everythin' went swimmingly, but we made it. Got the first Orb.

[ Of exactly how many though? That was never specified, no? How many of them are needed exactly ]

So here's the piece of advice from yer senpai— don't get bitten, be th'one to bite, that way ya won't miss out on th'action.

Congrats. Hope the next mission ends as well, and goes a little smoother.

[He used the 'cheers' as an excuse to take a drink and give himself a moment before replying. Senpai, huh? This young guy? Only when it came to this station and these missions.

His smile was almost feral, open enough to bare his teeth.]

Thanks, but you don't have to worry about me, Majima-kun. I always bite first. It's more fun that way.

[ That's the entire joke here, somehow he gets to be a senior of someone who would be a senior to him elsewhere. If not an outright enemy, but he got a taste how it is to fraternize with one, and the hierarchy still stands.

But then Zhao had to— smile like that. Make that thing with his voice, the unmistakable inflection. Oh. Is that's what's going on? Majima didn't get to cover his initial surprise, but he relaxes out of it into a lopsided smirk. It felt like an actor fitting a new face on. ]

Reeeeally now? [ The question came in a sing-song voice, almost to a familiar tune ] But that makes me worry more— ya should watch what ya put in yer mouth.

[ And now it was his turn to sip on a drink, innocently ]

[The comeback was perfect and Zhao let loose a peal of laughter. He lifted his drink to a fake chink against an invisible glass in the air.]

Only the best of the best!

[Then took a(nother) sip as if it were the best of the best whiskey available. Well, it was the only whiskey available currently so technically it was the best at the moment, too.]

You worry too much. [He said good-naturedly, with a little grin.] I can handle whatever is thrown my way, Hannya-man. But if I do bite off more than I can chew you'll be the first to know~.

[ That... wasn't a wrong assertion. Despite all the intense things that happened on the mission, being removed out of Sotenbori for over a month made him realize how much the chain truly weighed him down. He saw a much older face in the mirror, and stress lines that had no place on someone supposedly only twenty-four years old. ]

Isn't that my responsibility as yer senpai? [ He stated cheerfully, contrary to how he felt about being called out. ] Kiddin', kiddin'— on a second look ya seem like someone capable of takin' care of herself. I take back my worry.

If ya want it to be. [And for a moment his face grew soft, his smile genuine and touched, even if it was all a joke.] Can't say it isn't nice to have someone worry about you.

[Then the switch was flipped again and once more he had that sly smirk on his face. That brazen confidence and smug glint in his eyes that belied everything else about him.]

But you're not wrong and all that worry isn't gonna do you any good. I've got moves you've never seen the likes of, and maybe even I'll pull your ass out of the fire a time or two, senpai.

[ It probably is. Zhao's softer expression made him believe it must be. Any semblance of self-reflection or seriousness goes out of the window when Zhao throws that senpai back at him ]

Now, that's what I'd like to see! [ Fighting is his language, it's what always made him feel alive ] I have a fair share of my own, special moves. Maybe we'll end sharin' tips'n'tricks.

[ That reminds him ]

I brought a cool toy from that mission, might as well start a new weapon collection.

Ohho, you wanna see my moves? I've got plenty to throw at you. Never taught anyone anything but if you pick up a few ya might get too tough for your own good.

[He laughed at his own silliness. Then cocked his head to one side in curiosity.]

Really? What did you buy? Think it could take on my sword?

[ Majima was planning on showing off the fan he got in Gyeongje, but the very mention of sword stopped him in his track. An unusual weapon back in their time. Unlike a knife (anyone can conceal and use a knife) sword truly requires skill in using it, or you were just a laughable loser on the ground.

Change of plans ]

Oh, it is a bladed weapon. [ He stated deliberately and smugly, not giving any more details ] We got to spar someday. Ya might happen to be just exactly the muse I need.

[ Picking things up was more close than studying. Komaki tried to teach him his school, but Majima stubbornly found his own ways to counter it instead. Not that it ever stopped the old man from considering him his student in in some form ]

[Oooh, he made it sound so ~mysterious~. Zhao wondered if it were simply a dagger like the tanto he'd used in their fight at the Omi Headquarters or if Majima had picked up something a little fancier than that. Or maybe sillier if he was hiding it.

Zhao simply smiled in response and showed his genuine interest.]

Sounds good to me. Let's see how your 'bladed weapon' fares against my saber. And maybe I'll be kind enough to teach you a trick or two.

[ As far as Majima's concerned, they could throw down right now. Their drinks were barely a hindrance. Or maybe encouragement of stupid ideas? ]

Alright, but saber? I faced few guys who'new how to use these— [ And he might have occasionally picked them up, lying on the ground. ] It's a fancy weapon. There's a story out there and I wanna hear it.

Anytime, huh?

[Zhao said with a smile around the rim of his glass as he took a drink. Drinks were definitely encouragement for this sort of thing. Hell, Zhao had a whole style catered around how drunk he was. He'd only get better at it the more tipsy he was.]

Story is I'm trained in Chinese martial arts. Ya wanna know which ones your gonna have to face me in combat and find out first hand.

[ Majima hummed in confirmation as he downed the drink. And proceeded to pour them a bit more. Yes, anytime means even now. And it was a thought that was gaining more and more prominence with each drop of the whiskey. ]

Ah, yer bein' so mysterious. I get it, keepin' up the air of mystique makes everyone return for more. [ That's how it was with hostess and hosts, why not fighters? Majima tapped the glass as his thoughts wandered and made connections ] Yokohama, say— that's a triad backyard, innit?
